Community development
Community development underpin all STEP activities. Our dedicated community development team respond to ever-changing community needs and dynamics, working with those most likely to be left out of the process, project, policy or partnership. From nurturing new groups and delivering short term capacity building projects, to building inter-agency partnerships, STEP have acquired many years of experience in a wide range of areas.
Learning, Training and Development
Re-branded as ‘Footprint’ in 2006, our training department have continued to champion its values of self-help and independent learning, enabling people to ‘make their mark’ by empowering themselves through training and learning. Our team of highly professional tutors are committed to the development and provision of bespoke training programmes, delivering high quality training to members of the community. Our centre is accredited with a number of national awarding bodies, including City and Guilds, OCR and OCN.
Migrant Support - information, advice and guidance
The provision of quality assured information, advice and guidance to individuals is a key function in community development linking individual personal development and problem solving with collective community action. We concentrate on supporting those whose access to key mainstream sources (eg Citizens Advice Bureau) is restricted in some way. All of our frontline migrant support services have been brought together in one centre, and we provide support in first languages.
Strategic Development - policy and research
Our strategic development department includes our Migrant Worker Support Network (link to this section of the site) and Research and Policy Development work (link to this section of the site). STEP functions at both grassroots level and at the strategic level of advocacy, policy-making and dissemination of good practice. This is achieved through outcome-based networking, research, advocacy and policy development, all of which draws on the evidence base of the work at grassroots level.
Community Enterprise – interpreting and translation
The founding members of STEP recognised organisational sustainability as fundamental to its overall long term aim. For this reason, from 2001, we developed community enterprises that would also help financially support our core work. Our community enterprise company Step Training and Learning (STL) manages a number of community enterprises which meet both community needs and earn income:
• Training and learning
• Interpreting and translation services
• Workspace provision for micro and community enterprise
